The Discerning of Spirits
The gift of discerning of spirits is a powerful weapon in the Christian's arsenal! When God calls us into ministry, He equips us. God has called all of us into spiritual warfare and spiritual battle. His Church will be a militant Church, and the "gates of hell shall not prevail against her." The weapons God supplies us with are not carnal or fleshly weapons, but spiritual ones, they are "mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds." We are equipped by God for spiritual warfare through the gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12. God has said that these are the channels through which His power will flow, the avenues through which His Holy Spirit will operate. Chief among these gifts for the ministry of deliverance is the gift of discerning of spirits. We must rely upon the Holy Spirit for the ministry of deliverance and nothing else, not the arm of the flesh or the voice of demons. Frank Hammond explains the application of this gift to the believer, and provides examples of how it has worked in his own ministry. He concludes with a prayer of impartation for the reader to receive this gift and the gifts of knowledge, wisdom and faith.

The Call of Silent Love
A vocation is an extremely mysterious reality. The call of God is not something extrinsic; it penetrates to the most intimate centre of the heart. We are what we are on account of this call. The Call of Silent Love is a profound and eloquent examination of the twin themes of vocation and discernment in which the father-master speaks about the nature of a calling, and the interanl and external struggles, the discernment of spirits and the overall framework in which we live our lives. 'The reader is faced with a rare and compelling account of Carthusian spirituality that is simple, sustaining and inviting - to every Christian.' (The Tablet) Other books of classic Carthusian spirituality published by Gracewing include The Prayer of Love and Silence, They Speak by Silences and The Wound of Love.

Reading Old English Biblical Poetry
Reading Old English Biblical Poetry considers the Junius 11 manuscript, the only surviving illustrated book of Old English poetry, in terms of its earliest readers and their multiple strategies of reading and making meaning. Junius 11 begins with the creation story and ends with the final vanquishing of Satan by Jesus. The manuscript is both a continuous whole and a collection with discontinuities and functionally independent pieces. The chapters of Reading Old English Biblical Poetry propose multiple models for reader engagement with the texts in this manuscript, including selective and sequential reading, reading in juxtaposition, and reading in contexts within and outside of the pages of Junius 11. The study is framed by particular attention to the materiality of the manuscript and how that might have informed its early reception, and it broadens considerations of reading beyond those of the manuscript's compiler and possible patron. As a book, Junius 11 reflects a rich and varied culture of reading that existed in and beyond houses of God in England in the tenth and eleventh centuries, and it points to readers who had enough experience to select and find wisdom, narrative pleasure, and a diversity of other things within this or any book's contents.

Discernment
Henri Nouwen, beloved author, priest and world-renowned counsellor and guide, understood the spiritual life as a journey of faith and transformation that is deepened by accountability, community and relationships. Although Henri counselled many people during his lifetime, his principles of discernment were never collected into a single volume. Now, in association with the Nouwen Legacy Trust, Michael Christensen - one of Nouwen's long-time students - and Rebecca Laird have taken his coursework, journals and unpublished writings and created the definitive resource on spiritual discernment. Discernment is the final volume in a trilogy of Nouwen titles. Spiritual Direction and Spiritual Formation are also published by SPCK. 'For most people, the very word discernment implies something heady, private and maybe even elitist. Henri Nouwen, as always, makes seemingly complex things personal, practical, intelligent and very readable - all at the same time! This is a rich and helpful book.' Richard Rohr, author of Falling Upward 'An absolute gift to mind and soul.' Phyllis Tickle, author of Emergence Christianity 'Nouwen artfully explores how nature, our neighbours and our own hearts reveal God's active presence all around us. Life-giving and beautiful, yet practical and wise, he invites all those who doubt, feel lost, wounded or broken to discover the beating heart of love at the centre of the world.' Fruit of the Orchard
Fruit of the Orchard sheds light on how Catherine of Siena served as a visible and widespread representative of English piety becoming a part of the devotional landscape of the period. By analyzing a variety of texts, including monastic and lay, complete and excerpted, shared and private, author Jennifer N. Brown considers how the visionary prophet and author was used to demonstrate orthodoxy, subversion, and heresy. Tracing the book tradition of Catherine of Siena, as well as investigating the circulation of manuscripts, Brown explores how the various perceptions of the Italian saint were reshaped and understood by an English readership. By examining the practice of devotional reading, she reveals how this sacred exercise changed through a period of increased literacy, the rise of the printing press, and religious turmoil.

Discerning the Spirit(s)
Efforts to construct a Christian theology of religions have inevitably stumbled on the Christian scandal of particularity—the historical Jesus of Nazareth. What, however, if we began by focusing on the universal presence and activity of God in the world as symbolized by the Holy Spirit? Yong develops just such a pneumatological approach to religions, drawing, by way of resource, on the Pentecostal-charismatic experience of the Spirit. This book thus invites Pentecostals, charismatics, and other Christians to conceive of how a pneumatological approach to religions can invigorate the wider ecumenical conversation. At the same time, it also brings recent Pentecostal-charismatic scholarship into dialogue with a broader audience, including those interested in philosophical theology, world religions, global spiritualities, and comparative religion and theology.

Jezebel's Puppets
Many charismatic Christians are familiar with the biblical character of Jezebel, yet they do not know the demonic spirit by that name that still wreaks havoc today. The Jezebel spirit characterizes anyone who acts in the same manner as Jezebel did, engaging in immorality, idolatry, false teaching and unrepentant sin. Its manifestations are conniving and destructive, dwelling in she who desires to have her way, no matter who is destroyed in the process. You can't defeat what you can't see. While most people are hyper-focused on Jezebel--and are basing their warfare on a misunderstanding of what Jezebel really is--fewer understand the workings of Jezebel's demonic partners in crime. The spirit of Jezebel couldn't execute all its wicked plots without the spirits of Ahab, the false prophets and the eunuchs. This book will fully expose this destructive team's plan, teaching readers how to discern each spirit and defeat them!

Seeing the Supernatural
Foundational Teaching on Discerning What Is Happening in the Spiritual Realm For many believers, operating in the gifts of the Spirit has become a normal way of life. Yet there is one often-overlooked, often-misunderstood gift crucial to the well-being of the church: the gift of discerning spirits. This gift is the powerful supernatural ability to hear and see into the spiritual realm, yet many people who have it may think they are crazy. The Chronicles of a Discerner
So I am a discerner, now what? Maybe that was your question as you picked up this book. Perhaps you are more mature in discernment and surprised that someone has written about it, but you are reading it out of curiosity. Either way, the Holy Spirit is going to meet you where you are! Holy Spirit has something amazing in store for you, to help you navigate this gift. I feel His heart on it. Many discerners have had the gift since birth but have been unsure of what they carry. They have been misunderstood, isolated, and rejected. Here are some insights to this book: What Is Discerning of Spirits Help, What Do I Feel Discerning the Angels Discerning the Holy Spirit Discerning Human Spirits / Motives Discerning Demons Discerning the Glory If you are one seeking to be mentored in the things of the Spirit the good news is you hold in your hand the priceless personal insights of one who has gone before you. In this book April Stutzman reveals her very personal journey of discovery into the Discerning of Spirits. Not many people are prepared to share what you will read here for fear of being ridiculed, thought strange or a misfit. However, if you have ever picked up thoughts that were not your own, received unexplainable feelings on certain part of your body or sensed or seen angels then its likely you were operating in the discerning of spirits. April provides wisdom in how she learned to navigate these experiences. The sad truth is many misunderstand these glimpses into the world of spirits around them and consequently fail to reach the fullness of their spiritual potential. Discerning of spirits is a complementary gift and for that reason it is often overlooked. However, this gift of the Holy Spirit enhances and fine tunes all the other gifts including: deliverance, counsel, dream interpretation and the delivery of prophecy. This is a timely and an easy-to-read journey of her book. Adrian Beale and Adam F Thompson Authors of The Divinity Code to Understanding your Dreams and Visions It would be difficult to imagine a better moment in history for a book on the subject of discerning of spirits. With the current seemingly continual conflict between political ideologies, economic systems, gender identities and identity politics, sexual morays and the pervasive role of government in every area of life we must be able to see the world through God’s eyes and act decisively and confidently by His grace. Traditional mindsets will not show us how to live in these chaotic times. We must know God’s will and to be able to articulate it against every vain philosophy and worldly orientation to be overcomers. I heartily recommend April Stutzman’s book, The Chronicles of a Discerner, as a helpful guide through the confusing maze of modern demonic agendas that besiege today’s professing Christians at every turn. John Cassian and the Reading of Egyptian Monastic Culture
This book examines the method of meditative reading encouraged by John Cassian (c. 360-435) in his ascetic writings, the bulk of which are fictive dialogues that purportedly record the instruction he had received from Egyptial Christian monks. This instruction was at its core an interactive experience, depending upon both the discernment of the master and diligent application of instruction by the student. Driver examines Cassian's understanding of the act of reading and suggests the implications of this for Cassian's monastic teaching and it interprets Cassian's method of reading in light of contemporary discussions of reading and the self.

The Holy Spirit and His Gifts
The Holy Spirit and His Gifts was written to provide insight and revelation into the third person of the Holy Trinity. This work of exegesis has been presented in a plain, down-to-earth style that will help the reader understand more fully who the Holy Spirit is and the depth of relationship that He offers to the child of God. The Holy Spirit and His Gifts is intended to provide an increased comprehension of the interaction of God the Holy Spirit with the creation that He so desperately loves and desires to minister to and through. Questions such as "Who is the Holy Ghost? Does God still heal? Are tongues for today?" are answered from a strictly biblical point of view. This book will be like a handbook to lead Christians into an ever-increasing, ever-deepening relationship with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost.

How to See the Holy Spirit, Angels, and Demons
Are God, angels, and demons really invisible? Or can the spirits be seen with human eyes, through the lens of Church Ethics? The gift of discerning of spirits is indispensible to the study of church ethics.Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), wrote two sets of Rules for Discerning of Spirits in his Spiritual Exercises in the early 1500s. He taught how the church can receive from God the gift to see otherwise invisible angels, demons, and the Holy Spirit. Ignatius' views were influenced by John Cassian, Jacobus de Voragine, Ludolph of Saxony, and Thomas Kempis. Ignatius' Rules are exegeted in dialogue with contemporary scholars Karl Rahner, Hugo Rahner, Piet Penning de Vries, Jules Toner, and Timothy Gallagher, and applied to one study of ecclesial ethics in the narrative theology of Samuel Wells. A four-step Ignatian "pneumato-ethical method" is developed, which any analyst can follow to see the spirits, by consolation/desolation, consent, manifestation, and pneumato-ethics. This method revolutionizes how we study ecclesiology, soteriology, missiology/world religions, liturgy, worship, Eucharist, hermeneutics, homiletics, pastoral counseling, church history, and politics. The spirits are not invisible at all. They can be clearly discerned through the lens of ecclesial ethics.

Reading and Living Scripture: Essays in Honor of William S. Kurz, S. J.
For decades, respected Scripture scholar Fr. William S. Kurz, S.J. has exemplified the unity of scholarship, faith, and action. In Reading and Living Scripture, edited by Jeremy Holmes and Kent Lasnoski, an international gathering of scholars pays tribute to his life and work. The first essay speaks to the need for the unity Fr. Kurz has lived so well. The next three essays illuminate the kind of scholarship typical of Fr. Kurz’s career: one tracks the key verb “choose” across Luke-Acts; another investigates the dinner at Emmaus through an interpretation of Caravaggio’s famous painting; a third explores how we should imagine the everyday life of ordinary people in the seven cities that first received the book of Revelation. The next two essays, together with the final essay of the volume, examine the necessary union of exegesis and faith: one cannot separate exegesis of the human events of Scripture from the theological meaning of the text, because human agency cannot be separated from the action of the divine agency. The remaining essays highlight how faith-filled scholarship should feed action: one interprets the relevance of Genesis 1–3 for a theology of work, and another argues that the early chapters of Genesis are still relevant for morality today; a third essay highlights the role of the charisms of the Spirit in the Christian life, reflecting Fr. Kurz’s own background in the charismatic movement; lastly, one essay describes Fr. Kurz’s long life of action in the pro-life movement. Written and assembled by friends, colleagues, students, and long-time friends of Fr. Kurz, this festschrift honors his accomplishments and mirrors his virtues.

Reading St. Luke's Text and Theology: Pentecostal Voices
Lukan narrative takes its readers into God’s story: how his salvation plan in Jesus began on the slopes of Judea and at the Sea of Galilee, ending on the hill of Calvary and the Mount of Olives, yet moving on and telling how the Spirit descended onto the Temple Mount empowering God’s people, who then began to fulfill the given mandate in the presence of the Spirit. Yet, readers of Luke-Acts, throughout the centuries, have had a meandering journey as they have tried to understand the narrative’s persuasion and Spirit-references. This book seeks to bring awareness to these challenges by some of the most respected Pentecostal biblical scholars and systematicians. Here their vigorous labor with the questions of hermeneutics and theology in relation to Lukan writings have come to fruition. These contributions have been collected as a Festschrift in honor and celebration of the career of Roger Stronstad, a Pentecostal biblical scholar whose contribution to Lukan studies have moved Pentecostal scholarship from shadows into daylight. The editor of this volume invites the readers of Lukan narrative to journey together on the road to Emmaus, as we continue to ponder the events in the past, the present, and the future.
